On The Move

Humans not Arrows

The depiction of migration on maps is problematic. Arrows indicate the start and end points of a migration. They necessarily summarize the individual fates of many people in a simplified and abstract way.

But there is much more behind these arrows than merely a direction. They represent the complex stories of individuals, full of hopes, challenges, and profound changes.

This room relates stories of concrete migration experiences and presents a selection of global migration movements from antiquity to the present. ‘Humans not Arrows’ is an invitation to reflect on the individual lives behind the abstract representations.
