On the Move

Security

Security is a basic human need. If this need is not met and people’s dignity, freedom, or lives are threatened by violence, they feel forced to flee. Climate change and ecological disasters are increasingly escalating the number of people fleeing their homes.

By mid-2024, there were 122.6 million refugees worldwide, and the number continues to rise. More than half of them are internally displaced persons, meaning they have fled within their own country. One of the most severe crises is currently unfolding in Sudan. Since 2023, the Sudanese military and the RSF militia (‘Rapid Support Forces’) have been fighting relentlessly for control of the country. More than half the population is suffering from hunger. Cholera and dengue fever are spreading unchecked and the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse. Over 11 million people have been displaced — 8 million of them within their own country.
